#9 DARWIN'S DOOM vs #10 ICY HOT
(GAME 1) DARWIN'S DOOM 14, ICY HOT 0 -- Darwin wins on the heels of two Tranquility's to knock out a Manabarbs and Mudslide and keep the Hot at bay. The Hot looked to be in control early with ample mana, defense and counters in-hand. They quickly dealt out 6-damage but ran out of answers for Darwin's creature base.
(GAME 2) ICY HOT 15, DARWIN'S DOOM -1 -- A great win by Icy Hot! Love the hang tight and wait for the right cards game plan. Two Wall of Heat, one Wall of Tears and some counters pretty much nullified everything the Doom wanted to do (attack). Worked very nicely, and a Rathi Dargon dealt 20 of 21 damage. So fun. Deck might want a creature who can counter the opponent though (Ertai, Wizard Adept?). Darwin, on the other hand, needed only two creature kill cards and couldn't pull it.
(GAME 3) DARWIN'S DOOM 12, ICY HOT 0 -- The Doom finish this off on their terms - laying down the hurt in six quick turns. A Yavimaya Ants dealt the first 15-damage, and closed it all out with a Hurricane. The Hot fell flat after putting faith in a Soldevi Excavation - it ended up stunting their momentum and they couldn't recover (that lost Island would've helped too).
#8 FROZEN STIFFS vs #11 THE ATTRITIONISTS
(GAME 1) THE ATTRITIONISTS 10, FROZEN STIFFS 0 -- Underdog takes Game 1 without dealing a single point of damage from creatures. Good sign, or bad? Stiffs plodded thanks to only four mana, which shouldn't have stymied this badly.
(GAME 2) FROZEN STIFFS 6, THE ATTRITIONISTS 0 -- The Frozen win an ugly one thanks in large part to a board-freezing Winter Orb and a relentless Mirri, Cat Warrior to dole out some damage. Once properly stalled, the Stiffs dealt a game-ending 8-damage thanks to a Storm Seeker. On to Game 3!!
(GAME 3) FROZEN STIFFS 2, THE ATTRITIONISTS -1 -- Stiffs cook up a deadly recipe for the Atts starting with a Winter Orb appetizer, a main course of Storm Seeker's and finisher dessert a la Mirri. The lost series highlighted a lack of cohesion for the Atts. Haphazard defense and no offense wasn't necessarily a winning combination.
#8 DARWIN'S DOOM vs. #9 FROZEN STIFFS
(GAME 1) DARWIN'S DOOM 20, FROZEN STIFFS -3 -- Ten long turns meant Darwin had more than enough time to wrangle up some creatures to do battle; 2x Fyndhorn Elves, then Elvish Archers, Fallow Wurm, Woolly Spider and Erhnam Djinn. Two Giant Growth's helped them sludge thru the Frozen sludgery for a good win.
(GAME 2) DARWIN'S DOOM 18, FROZEN STIFFS -1 -- Speed, speed and more speed thanks to a turn-1 Fastbond. The Doom make short work of their opponent (7 turns) to move into the Premier Bracket in style. The Stiffs, on the other hand, were completely exposed in this series -- it is a LOT of work for them to do....anything. This game saw three Tutor's used to get them even slightly off the ground. Yeeeeesh.
#1 BAD ASS FAULT vs. #9 DARWIN'S DOOM
(GAME 1) BAD ASS FAULT 4, DARWIN'S DOOM 0 -- A slow, intentional dismantling of Darwin. Most damage was done by Team Captain;, Hyppy, and two Shocker's to magnify the Megrim on the board to dispose of Darwin. The final score looked closer than it actually was due to a Pox. Make no mistake, Darwin had no offense and nooooo shot in this game.
(GAME 2) DOOM 4, FAULT -8 -- The Doom strike back by putting out a Erhnam Djinn out on turn-2 and that fueled the attack all game. The Fault looked to be turning the table with two Rukh's and two Shocker's until a timely Hurricane wiped out the winged foes. The game was over a few turns later.
(GAME 3) DOOM 17, FAULT -1 -- Well, well!! The Doom are on the offensive against the #1-seed! This time, they relied heavily on a Fyndhorn Elder to launch their attack - an Ants/Archer combo did most of the damage, with a Hurricane to help finish it off. The Fault find themselves in odd territory down 2 games to 1. They had mana struggles early, and that stunted their defensive onslaught. A late Wheel of Fortune did little to help, and they were left for dead quickly by turn 5. Ut oh.
(GAME 4) DOOM 10, FAULT -3 -- The impossible made possible. Darwin skates on by thanks largely to a Sylvan Library, doling out muchos damage via a Ranger/Ants combo. A Tranquility saved them the game, as it destroyed two Megrim's in play with a certain Pox to follow. Down goes the #1-seed!!!!
#4 SLIVER LINING vs. #5 FIRE DRILLED
(GAME 1) DRILLERS 11, SLIVERS -9 -- Great win by the Drillers. They matched the Slivers' full stable of creatures with direct damage discarding five creatures in the process. They dealt more damage with a Thunderbolt and Incinerate, then a bit more with a Gargoyle and a Horde once the battlefield was open to seal the deal. The Slivers are in for a tough one here. They couldn't get any momentum early and were constantly damaging themselves with mana producers.
(GAME 2) DRILLERS 20, SLIVERS -3 -- FD lights all five Sliver creatures on fire and wins handily.
(GAME 3) DRILLERS 8, SLIVERS -1 -- The Drillers were patient and demonstrative, throwing down a 12-damage turn with two Chain Lightning's, a Lightning Bolt and a Fork. An earlier Ball Lightning and an Incinerate later, and this one was over. The shift away from Mana Flare/Power Surge toward more burn spells has been the right move. There were even two Shivan's in-hand for insurance :) Goodnight, Slivers.
#3 SMASHED POTATOES vs. #6 NO LANDS FOR YOU
(GAME 1) NLFY 7, SMASHED POTATOES -2 -- They destroy 8 creatures and 7 lands in this one to take Game 1! An early Nevinyrral's Disk was critical in knocking out several creatures, a Crusade and a Field of Souls. Then, turns later, a Sengir Vampire was joined by a Demonic Hordes and the table completely turned. The Hordes chipped away at the Potatoes' mana and left them stranded. The Sengir was left unguarded by 4 Potato creatures and did the rest, ending things on turn-17.
(GAME 2) NLFY 2, POTATOES 0 -- Incredible win. They were down to 16 to 1 and came alllllll the way back over 18 bruising turns. Phenomenal. They used a last ditch Nevinyrral's Disk to wipe the board, played an Icy Manipulator to control the Potatoes land base, then a Black Vise, Terror, Choking Sands to kill off another land, a Royal and a Demonic Hordes to take the W. Amazing string of cards drawn in this sequence. Potatoes had four lands destroyed in this game and another four turned into Swamps.
(GAME 3) NLFY 17, POTATOES 0 -- Redemption!!! No Landia wins this in a romp! The twin Black Vise's dealt 20 damage in 4 turns as the former champ struggled to put enough mana in play to start under the Vise's hand tax. The Potatoes are cooked.
#2 SWAMP THINGS vs. #7 MURPHY'S LAW
(GAME 1) LAW 16, THINGS -2 -- The underdog trikes first thanks to a superior initial draw. A mid-game Balance knocked out two opposing creatures and it was enough to buy Murphy time for their own offensive.
(GAME 2) LAW 16, THINGS -1 -- The Law subside on only two Mountains in this game - practically unheard of in a win. Naturally, this felt like more of a loss for the Things than a win for the Law, as damage was dealt by a recurring Sandstalker - pretty uninspiring. The Things had a poor initial draw, again, and sputtered.
(GAME 3) THINGS 17, LAW -22 -- Back to the basic formula, the Things lay a first-turn Buried Alive and follow it up with a Living Death a few turns later. Then, a whopping 32-damage rained down on the Law via two Kraken's, a Fog Elemental and team captain; Spirit of the Night. The Law showed their true bland colors in this one - mana struggles into no concerted offense or defense. For the Law, it's either their way or their doors get blown off.
(GAME 4) LAW 13, THINGS -16 -- Facing certain defeat, the Law pull the only card that could win them the game in Pandemonium. They play it along with two Dreadnought's and slap 24 points of damage on the Things. Game, set, match. The Things fail to put their go-to-card-combo in play for a third time in four games and look more vulnerable than they had all season. "HELP WANTED."
PREMIER BRACKET SEMI-FINALS
#5 FIRE DRILLED vs. #9 DARWIN'S DOOM
(GAME 1) FIRE DRILLED 7, DARWIN -6 -- In the second-longest game of the playoffs to date, the Drillers hit first after 19 long turns thanks to two Balduvian Horde's and 12 direct damage cards. They killed 9 Doom creatures in the process - reminiscent of their series against the Slivers. Darwin is in trouble -- pulling nine creatures with all of them ending up in the graveyard is pretty tough. Their only way to do damage is via creatures and if most of them are being destroyed immediately, then it's hard to see a path to victory. Drillers spelling 'doom' with a caps lock on.
(GAME 1) DARWIN 9, FIRE DRILLED 0 -- Another bruising game, this time 15-turns as the Doom pull out the victory. They were able to withstand heavy firepower early, losing six creatures in the process, but capitalized on FDs mana struggles. A Sylvan Library led to game-ending cards in two Hurricane's and an Ants to even the series.
(GAME 3) DARWIN 1, FIRE DRILLED -3 -- What a series this is shaping up to be! Darwin wins by the skin of their mossy teeth as this one comes down to the hire. Again they hang on thanks to a extremely well timed Hurricane They lost six creatures in this game but held on with a Thelonite Druid and a Fallow Wurm, not to mention only four lands, too.
(GAME 4) FIRE DRILLED 3, DARWIN -3 -- Big comeback for the Drillers pushes this series back to even. They were down to 3 life, and had only dealt 6-damage themselves until two Shivan's and 7 lands put the game out of reach. Amassing Mountain's was critical in their victory to fuel the twin Dragon's. They dispatch five Doom creatures in the victory. Two victories for Drillers thanks to third-wave offense (Shivan Dragon, Balduvian Horde) makes for an interesting callout.
(GAME 5) FIRE DRILLED 16, DARWIN -4 -- Well well, old friend Furnace of Rath sets the stage for 20pts of damage in last turn of the game; 4 from Granite Gargoyle's, then combined 16 from a Thunderbolt, Incinerate and Shock. Just in case, they were sitting on a Shivan with two more Mountains on the way. Unsurprisingly given the highly competitive nature of this series, the Doom would have won if they survived one more turn.
(GAME 6) DARWIN 12, FIRE DRILLED -4 --Huge victory thanks to big boy Force of Nature (pic) to push a Game 7. Joined by a Yavimaya Ants, the Doom dealt eight damage in the final turn to thanks entirely to their trample abilities. Nice. Earlier damage done by a Wurm, and an Archer. The Drillers used up most of their direct damage spells to play defense (killed a Force of Nature and Fallow Wurm), but the well ran dry to put on any offensive pressure.
(GAME 7) DARWIN 6, FIRE DRILLED -16 -- Ah ha!!!!!!! There it is, a Game 7 victory propelling the Qualifier Bracket champion-Doom to the Premier League Finals! What a road! The props for the victory go to Sylvan Library - picking off card by card to surge ahead - then a Force of Nature who just couldn't be taken down but the Drillers. A ton of mana helped tremendously, as the Drillers fail to put more than three Mountains in play. Tough way to go out, but a phenomenal series, and great victory by Darwin.
#6 NO LANDS FOR YOU vs. #7 MURPHY'S LAW
(GAME 1) NLFY 10, LAW -1 -- No Landia was in complete control the entire game. Several M-Kill cards put them in the driver seat early, and then a Icy Manipulator helped immobilize Murphy's Law. A Sengir Vampire dealt most of the non-Black Vise damage, and was followed by a Demonic Hordes and another Sengir. The Law never recovered after losing their initial mana base.
(GAME 2) MURPHY'S LAW 11, NLFY -11 -- Great win for the Law to even the series! Losing only 1-land gave them room to breathe, as they pushed two Pandemonium's that led to a game ending Phyrexian Dreadnought. Seven other damage done by a Viashino Sandstalker and a Lightning Bolt. Way to capitalize on a nice sputteroo by NLFY.
(GAME 3) NLFY 3, LAW -7 -- Grinding grinding grinding away. The all-blacks take down the Law in 11-turns with some clean defense and ride a Demonic Hordes to victory. The Law lost all four lands in this one, leaving their one chance at victory stranded in-hand (Pandemonium + Dreadnought).
(GAME 4) NLFY 11, LAW -3 -- Very similar to Game 3 in that NLFY destroyed lands and wrought havoc while the Law sat by and watched - game winning combo in-hand again.
(GAME 5) NLFY 22, LAW -2 -- Two Black Vise's go to TOWN on the soon-to-be-former Murphy's Law. All damage was done by the twin Vise's except for a Choking Sands dealing two points on a Plateau. NLFY won this series in a few different ways, which is always fun to see; Black Vise, creature attack, strong prolonged defense. They were able to win this game despite only having 3 Swamps in play.

#6 NO LANDS FOR YOU vs. #9 DARWIN'S DOOM
(GAME 1) NLFY 1, DARWIN -3 -- What a game, coming down to a single point of life for the all-blacks. Two Terror's were absolutely critical to the win as they dispatched an early Fyndhorn Elder and a Fallow Wurm - both gave NLFY time to put some offense on the board in Sengir Vampire. The Doom faced serious adversity, having lost 7 lands and 8 creatures in this game. This is going to be a great series.
(GAME 2) DARWIN 4, NLFY -6 -- Darwin cruises to even the series thanks to mana issues for their opponent. Seldom used City of Solitude was demonstrative, halting NLFYs ability to defend with Icy Manipulator and giving the Doom time to put out some front-court heft in Force of Nature and Fallow Wurm.
(GAME 3) NLFY 20, DARWIN -1 -- Home team wins for the third straight time as No Landia wipes Darwin out with a dual-Vise attack in five turns. Darwin couldn't rebound from two lost lands, strangely.
(GAME 4) DARWIN 20, NLFY -2 -- Darwin strikes back with a quick victory of their own. Key to the W was their home field advantage - a turn-2 Aluren led to early offense in Elvish Archers and a Fallow Wurm. NLFY couldn't outpace them and lacked the defense to dispose of the two creatures. Game was over in six turns as the series evened at two apiece.
(GAME 5) NLFY 1, DARWIN 0 -- For a second time in the series, which is unheard of, the victor is brought to the very end (1pt of life remaining) and both times in favor of NLFY. It was the 7th turn when they nearly flatlined, but No Landia held tight for 11 more turns thanks to some gritty defense (MVP Royal Assassin), killing 3 creatures in the process. A Black Vise helped early on, and a Terror was key to dispatch a Erhnam Djinn too. Huge comeback win, but might have been more of a loss for the Doom, who are now on the brink of elimination.
(GAME 6) DARWIN 4, NLFY 0 -- Good rebuttal by the Doom as they merely outdraw their opponent. In their 15 drawn cards, they had 8 lands -- huge against a team hell bent on destroying lands, like NLFY. Not only that, but their seven other cards included two Giant Growth's for an Elvish Archers, a Yavimaya Ants and a game-ending Hurricane. Here comes a Finals finale!!
(GAME 7) NLFY 13, DARWIN -3 -- In what looked to be No Landia's undoing, they drew two Black Vise's early and were able to subside on only one land for the first four turns. One mana in four turns normally spells disaster. Darwin put on a meager attack, perhaps out of gas after outlasting every other team from Round 1 onward. Plain and simple, they were mana strapped against the most devastating mana-kill team in the league, and for the second time this series. No one wins this game against the land-crusher; NLFY. Alas, a new champion is crowned; No Lands For You!!
